Effects of Young Children's Temperament on Social Competence Mediated by Maternal Parenting Behavior

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of young children's temperament on social competence mediated by maternal parenting behavior. Subjects of this study were 322 mothers of 4 and 5 years old children attending 7 different nursery schools located in C city. Data were analyzed by frequency, percentage, Cronbach's ¥á, t-test, F-test, Scheffe test, and Pearson product-moment correlation using SPSS 18.0 program, and path model was analyzed by using AMOS 18.0 program. The result of this study were as follows: First, children's emotionality of temperament had a direct effect on mother¡¯s affectionate, autonomous, and rejective parenting behavior. Second, young children's temperament had direct effects on social competence. Third, mother¡¯s affectionate parenting behavior had direct effects on all sub-scales of social competence. Fourth, maternal parenting behavior had mediating effects between children's temperament and social competence. In conclusion, this research imply that mother's parenting behavior should be considered with children's temperament. Also, this research can be used as a primary source to find ways not only to increase children's social competence, but also to improve mother's affectionate and autonomous parenting behavior for parenting education and counseling.
